Saving water resources

The interest of EMASESA to provide the best possible use of water is based on three pillars:

  • Promotion of responsible consumption
  • Reduction of leaks
  • Reuse of water

  • Promotion of responsible consumption
  • The first aspect created an ambitious management plan of demand . It reduced domestic consumption from 138 litres/person/day in 2001 to 119 litres/person/day in 2011. These values are clearly below the Spanish daily average of 126 litres of water, according to the ‘Suministros de Agua Potable y saneamiento en España’ (Water supply and Sanitation in Spain) survey conducted by Asociación Española de Abastecimientos de Agua y Saneamientos (Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation).

  • Reduction of leaks
  • The important work undertaken to reduce leaks in every stretch of the supply network, both in adduction from reservoirs and in the distribution of households should also be mentioned. In order to receive funding from the European Union for the construction of the reservoir Los Melonares, EMASESA needed to commit to reduce leaks, and to do so a significant investment effort was made. Thus, he total leak in the supply network rate (adduction, treatment and distribution) is 15.5%, obtained in 2010, two years ahead of target required.

  • Reuse of water
  • EMASESA also focuses on the reuse of water once it is treated in every possible activity, such as irrigation of its own facilities and golf courses or in refrigeration of certain equipments and industrial installations.
