At the end of the urban water management cycle, the company operates Water Treatment Plants with biological treatment (activated sludge system) and with a success rate above 93% in the removal of organic matter. The annual volume treated is 87.098 dam3.
These infrastructures, that fulfill all the environmental requirements applicable, have authorisations to discharges. They establish the acceptable limits of the main pollution parameters that must be met before its discharge into public waterways.
It is worth highlighting the treatment of sewage sludge. This process closes the urban water management cycle. It should also be taken into account that the main generated waste is not only water but also sludge.
EMASESA, MASESA, in view of the characteristics of this sludge, has obtained the relevant environmental authorisations for its valuation. It is produced in the Sludge Composting Plant, where organic matter and nutrients are provided to agriculture, obtaining a stable compost with characteristics in accordance with the rules governing its use in agriculture.
With regard to the environmental importance of the valuation process through sewage sludge, it is worth stressing that it entails putting elements of organic matter and nutrients at the disposal of natural cycles. The benefits of the edaphic system are well known and particularly appreciated by farmers.
